Babes In The Woods, is a rare masterpiece by Franz Lefler discovered in a flea market in 1975, in Portland Oregon. It was confirmed as the original by the Antique Road Show in 1997. 

 

Franz Lefler was born in 1831 in Langenbruck, Bohemia.  He died in 1898 in WeiBenbach an der Triesting (Lower Austria). He studied in Praque and Vienna. While living in Vienna, he painted scenes of children, genre, history and portrait paintings. Babes In The Woods was painted sometime in the 1870's. In 1904, the painting was shown on the cover of the "New York Interiors" at the turn of the Century in the Joseph Weber home, of the popular Weber & Lew M. Fields comedy team.
